Mangalore, Jul 25: Condemning the increased sexual assaults and rapes of women, several students protested under the banner of Students Federation of India (SFI) near the DC office on Thursday July 24.

SFI district president Nithin Kuthar said, “SFI has organized a state-level protest against the increased sexual assault on women. Our district is the land where women are respected, but since the past few years, assaults on women are rampantly increasing."

"Whenever sexual assaults were reported, the SFI has taken the initiative to protest against the injustice. The police department has failed to prevent the increase in rapes of women. Instead, they are protecting the criminals. Though we have eight MLAs and three ministers in the district, they are not raising their voice against the increasing rapes and sexual assaults of women," he added.

He said that the ministers were dozing when there was a serious debate on rape in the assembly.

He also said that moral policing and sexual assault on women were increasing in the district and Soujanya had not got justice even after CBI probing.

Santhosh Kumar Bajal of DYFI said, “Sexual assault is increasing, but a few cases have come to light. The problem is not with the dress code of women, but the mentality of men. The police system has failed to curb the increasing rapes. Police have also delayed in filing the charge sheet in the rape cases."

"The BJP has no moral right to protest against rape cases. Rape cases in rural areas are not coming to the limelight. There is no end to moral policing in the district. The police should invoke the Goonda Act against those involved in moral policing. Only education and awareness can prevent rapes and the police should take stringent action against the culprits,” he added.

DYFI district president B K Imthiyaz also spoke on the occasion.
