Of late, theft of cows which are let out for grazing and illegal trafficking of cattle has been on the rise in the villages around Siddapur. Although the police received frequent complaints on this phenomenon, they had been unable to make any headway as they failed to get reliable clues.

After the policemen intensified patrolling and set up check points on roads, illegal cattle traffickers are learnt to have found a via media by finding houses located at deserted places, slaughtering cows in these houses and selling beef there.

In the recent past, there have been instances of unknown people from other states coming to the villages located at the foot of the western ghat and buying land there.
