Puttur, Aug 17: In a heart-rending incident two housewives of Kasargod origin drowned in River Sheere near famous Bendr Teertha here on Wednesday August 16 night.  Despite continuous search operations, their bodies have not yet been found.

The drowned have been identified as Vinay Malya (42) and Vijayamma Malya (48), residents of Kasargod.  They were sisters-in-law.  While Vinay's husband Vidyakar Malya is Kasargod town muncipality member, Vijayamma's is Vidyakar's brother Varadaraj's wife.  Varadaraj is the owner of Canara Lunch Home at Kasargod.

They had come to perform certain religious rites at their 'moolasthana' which is situated in one Ramanna Poojary's property at Irde near here.  The religious programmes were supposed to be held on Wednesday and Thursday August 17.  After a day-long programme, both Vinay and Vijayamma were walking along the concrete pavement on the vented dam along the Sheere River.

As they walked ahead, suddenly one of them slipped from the pavement into the river.  Since they were holding the hands of each other, both  of them fell in the river and drowned.  Though the locals tried to rescue them, they did not succeed. Even the fire brigade team and expert divers from Puttur tried their best.  But all their efforts to trace these women did not succeed till Thursday morning.
