Udupi, Aug 1: The general meeting of the City Municipality Council (CMC) was held at Sathyamurthy Auditorium, CMC on Thursday July 31.
Vasanthi Shetty, CMC member, raised the issue of the stray dog menace in the rural areas due to the heaps of garbage lying on the roadside and corners. Subrahmanya, department of environment, replied that there was no provision for killing the street dogs under the Animal Control Act and so he had sterilized as many dogs as possible and a vaccination plan has been initiated.
He added that the CMC could shift them to other areas.
Yashpal and Dinkar Shetty stressed the need for disposal of waste and demanded immediate action against those who violate the rules.
Shashidhar Kundar criticized the illegal construction of a house along the compound wall belonging to Vedavyasa Acharya, at Kalsanka, Udupi and said that the land has not been surveyed by the Tahsildar. Then, the CMC president decided to demolish the complex.
The CMC has also decided to provide laptops to 10 students pursuing professional courses, and the selection was held under the standing committee.
Srikanth Rao, municipal commissioner, spoke about the problems of street merchants and said that a survey will be conducted on them and after a discussion he will come to a decision. “There are hardly 269 street vendors in Udupi,” he added.
“Karnataka state stands first in malaria. Mangalore and Udupi lead the list of areas where malaria is spreading. CMC Udupi requires a health officer,” added the commissioner.
He also said that the CMC plays a crucial role in controlling epidemics. The meeting ended with a peaceful discussion. M R Pai, senior opposition party leader, gave many valuable suggestions.
