Mangalore, Aug 22: Mangalore University has decided to re-introduce Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) degree programme.
The university had stopped offering the programme about seven years ago.
The Academic Council of the university at its meeting on Monday gave its consent to the revised draft regulations governing M. Phil. degree programme.
This assumes significance as the University Grants Commission (UGC) through a latest notification had said that candidates having M. Phil degree in the subject concerned need not clear the National Level Eligibility (NET) test to become a lecturer in an undergraduate course. It also said that candidates having a Ph.D. degree need not pass NET to teach both at the postgraduate level and undergraduate level. But candidates who do not have either an M.Phil. or Ph.D. degree should pass NET to become a lecturer. This came into effect from June 14, 2006.
