Japan envoy bats for greater people-to-people contact

New Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS): Japan's ambassador to India Takeshi Yagi Monday said greater people-to-people contact between the two countries can be expanded through education and hoped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit his country soon.

"We have seen a spurt in the activities between two countries. However, there is a need for expansion of people-to-people contact," the ambassador said at the Japan Education Fair here.

The Japan education fair is a step in the right direction as it promotes interface of leading universities of Japan with the Indian students, he added.

"We are hoping the prime minister would visit Japan sometime soon."

Yagi invited Indian students to visit and study in Japan.

Nine Japanese universities and one language school are participating in the fair organized by Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), Ritsumeikan University in collaboration with Embassy of Japan.

"Japan has a lot of leading universities in most of the academic fields including natural sciences and engineering. To welcome more Indian students to the Japanese universities, the government has targeted India as one of the strategic countries this year," said Hideki Yonekawa, vice president, JASSO.

The fair was attended by over 1,300 students who also got glimpses of Japanese culture as videos on Origami, tea ceremony, Japanese dolls and robots were showcased.
