10 killed as typhoon Nakri lashes South Korea

Seoul, Aug 4 (IANS/EFE): At least 10 people were killed and two others injured in South Korea when typhoon Nakri battered the country's southern region during the weekend, the central disaster management agency in Seoul reported Monday.

Seven people, including a family with two children, died after their car was swept away by floodwaters at a bridge in North Gyeongsang province, in the southeast of the country.

In the same province, another person died and two were injured when a tree fell over them while camping, the agency said.

A man died in South Jeolla province when a flying object displaced by strong winds hit him on the head.

Storms caused by the typhoon uprooted trees and flooded bridges in four southern provinces of the country, and also left over 13,000 houses without electricity for several hours.

Over 3,500 hectares of farmland were flooded and many houses and fishing boats were severely damaged, according to the central disaster management agency.

Nakri is the 12th and, so far, the most destructive typhoon to hit South Korea in 2014. It damaged about a dozen roads and uprooted 130 trees before weakening Monday.
