Sri Lanka drought hits one million


Colombo, Aug 4 (IANS): Over one million people in Sri Lanka have been severely affected by a prolonged drought in 14 districts, Health Minister Maithreepala Sirisena said Monday.

The drought has enveloped parts of the north, north central and eastern parts of the island nation, Xinhua reported.

The government has allocated 1.9 billion rupees ($1.47 million) to provide relief to the people.
