Mangalore, Aug 23: The commuters on National Highway 17 will at last have temporary relief from their woes since the Highway Authority has taken up the repair works from Tuesday August 21.  The Highway Authority has been patching up potholes and at some places where patch work will not suffice, it is re-laying tar.

The Highway Authority sources said that though people have been staging protest, repair works could not be undertaken owing to incessant rains.  Now that the rains have subsided, some immediate works are undertaken.  The work started at Hosabettu near Suratkal on Tuesday.

The officials have said that if the rains permit, the roads will be repaired within a week.  Though dry weather prevailed for the last two days, nothing could be assured about the coming days.

On the other hand, works of turning NH 17 into four-lane are going on at a rapid phase.  A hot mix machine has already been installed at Adyar and one more machine is to purchased in the near future.
