Mamata to Durga Puja special saree designs

Kolkata, Aug 5 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will handpick designs for a special range of sarees to be launched before Durga Puja, a minister said Tuesday.

Minister of State for Micro and Small Scale Enterprises and Textiles Swapan Debnath said 15 to 16 designs from a rich oeuvre of traditional motifs will be given to Banerjee.

The motifs, to be done in natural dyes on weaves of cotton and Murshidabad silks, will be presented from the handloom house Tantuja, an undertaking of the state government.

The Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government revived the ailing Tantuja.

"I will present 15 to 16 designs to the chief minister. Once these are approved, we will start production. I will try to visit today (Tuesday)," Debnath, also Tantuja's chairman, told IANS.

The six-yard wonders will be available just in time for the festive season, he said. The designs are a product of the enterprise's Design Facilitation Centre.

This year's Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the Bengalis, begins Sep 29.
