Large amount of heroin seized in Myanmar

Yangon, Aug 7 (IANS): Nearly 155 kg of heroin along with weapons and ammunition were seized in Myanmar in a number of raids in July-August, media reports said Thursday.

During the raids in the country's Shan State-East, heroin was seized in Tachileik and Monghsat from July 14 to Aug 4, while 2,516 stimulant tablets and 60 kg of caffiene as well as some assorted weapons were also confiscated, Xinhua reported.

Fourteen people were arrested for suspected of drug trafficking, the report added.

Myanmar had implemented its 15-year drug elimination plan (1999- 2014) in three five-year phases to fight drug abuse.

It cultivated a total of 57,800 hectares of poppy plantations in 2013.

Over the past 16-year period, Myanmar authorities have confiscated 50,000 kg drugs, including 9,475 kg heroin.

Myanmar is known to be Southeast Asia's largest poppy growing country and the world's second largest after Afghanistan.
