Beltangady, Aug 9: Security staff of Dharmasthala Sri Manjunatheshwara Temple rescued a woman who had jumped into Netravati river with the intention of committing suicide.
The lady confessed that she had come to the temple town with the specific objective of giving up her life. The incident occurred at the bathing bay of Dharmasthala on Thursday August 7 evening.
The woman, whose name has been concealed, said that she was employed in a private company in Bangalore. She stays with parents and a younger brother.
On Thursday she was overtaken by a sense of dejection and depression. She started from home for office, but on the way, changed her mind and came to Dharmasthala by catching a bus from the city bus stand there. At around 7 pm she reached Dharmasthala and directly went to the bathing bay.
At the time of her arrival at the river bank the river was overflowing due to heavy rains, and a number of devotees were taking bath. Even as the devotees, who were taken aback at the sudden turn of events watched helplessly, the lady jumped into the river.
The people shouted for help, at which, temple security staff Yatish Gowda jumped into the river and rescued her with the help of some locals.
After providing first aid, the woman was allowed to stay in the temple lodge. Thereafter, her parents were called to inform that their daughter was safe at Dharmasthala. Her parents immediately started from Bangalore and reached Dharmasthala on Friday morning.
The woman, who said that she had been overcome with emotions over some unexplained worry, was taken back to Bangalore.
