Kundapur, Sep 5: Udupi MLA K Raghupati Bhat who had been leading blockade of overloaded ore trucks at Ottinene near Byndoor here was assaulted by a group of lorry drivers on Tuesday September 5 morning before the former called off his protest and allowed the lorries to enter the district.

The sources said that the lorry owners association has agreed to establish weigh bridge at Ottinene by September 12.  Once the association leaders assured this in writing, Raghupati withdrew his 4-day-long strike.  Accordingly many lorries which were stopped at Ottinene in the last 4 days were allowed to move further.

Earlier a group supported by Belgaum lorry association president tried to assault MLA and even tried to run lorry on the protestors.  However, some persons who were present on the spot pulled the MLA back and averted a possible tragedy.
