Mangalore: Besant Evening College hosts national conference LIBTRANS-2014

Mangalore, Aug 22: Besant Evening College Mangalore in association with Karnataka State College Librarians Association Bangalore, Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu Library Association Mangalore organized fifth UGC sponsored National Level conference 'LIBTRANS-2014- Libraries and Librarianship in Transition: Challenges and Opportunities here at the Beseant College Auditorium on Friday August 22.

After inaugurating the programme professor K Byrappa, Vice Chancellor Mangalore University said, "The city is a hub of educational and higher education institutions. Librarian is teacher's teacher, so- called teacher. The librarian is the pillar of an educational institution. A good librarian is equal to 100 professors. Today many educational institutions, universities and colleges have released the importance of a library."

He also made a mention of the contributions of Naganna Gowder and Ramshesha to the Mysore University Library.

He also said that teachers motivate students, librarians should motivate teachers to read books and utilize the resources. Librarian is the only person who will stretched in diversified studies such as music, arts, literature, science and economy. Job of a librarian is challenging; he/she has to grow with technology and has to facilitate the readers to spread knowledge and guide the institution. India should be a super power in knowledge. A librarian should visit the department and talk to faculty.

Professor Ramesh Babu retired professor from the Department of LISc Madras University said, "Librarians motivate readers, instigate people to understand technological transforming. Society is moving fast with the help of technology and it is the role of a librarian to use technology through different channels. Librarian is the teacher of teachers. Librarian gets a good name if he works hard."

Retired librarian and member of Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu Library Association Mangalore Indira and PhD degree holders in Library Science were felicitated on the occasion.

Kudpi Jagadish Shenoy presided on this occasion. Vasappa Gowda, the organising secretary briefed about the conference.

Dr Carmelita Goveas, principal of Besant Evening College welcomed the gathering.
