80 Taliban militants killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, Aug 24 (IANS): As many as 80 Taliban militants were killed and 47 others injured in military operations across Afghanistan, the country's interior ministry Sunday.

"Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) carried out cleanup operations in Kunar, Faryab, Kandahar, Wardak, Logar and Helmand province, killing 80 armed Taliban militants and wounding 47 others" since Saturday, Xinhua quoted a ministry statement as saying.

The ANSF also seized weapons, the statement said, without mentioning if there were any casualties on the side of security forces.

The Taliban were yet to make any comment.

Saturday, two policemen were wounded in a Taliban suicide bombing in the country's southern province of Helmand.

A surge in terror attacks has been witnessed in the country since mid-May when the Taliban launched a rebel offensive against Afghan security forces and NATO-led troops stationed in the country.

The Taliban insurgent group has launched several massive attacks over the past months to gain land as the Afghan forces are struggling to take over the security responsibilities from NATO-led troops by the end of this year.
