Satna (Madhya Pradesh), Aug 25 (NDTV): Ten people are feared killed and over 60 injured in a stampede at a temple in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh.
The stampede took place at about 6 am today, as devotees crowded the Kamtanath temple in Chitrakoot for a festival called the Somvati Amavasya.
"Some of the pilgrims who were walking fell on the ground and this triggered panic," senior police officer Pawan Srivastava was quTen people were killed and over 60 injured in a stampede this morning at a temple in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh.
The stampede took place at about 6 am today, as devotees crowded the Kamtanath temple in Chitrakoot for a festival called the Somvati Amavasya.
"Ten people were killed and over 60 are suspected to be injured," Collector ML Meena said.
In this festival, devotees, mostly women, roll on a path as part of the rituals.
"Some of the pilgrims who were walking fell and this triggered panic," senior police officer Pawan Srivastava was quoted in reports as saying.
District officials fear the number of dead and injured could rise and said five of those killed were women.
A compensation of Rs. two lakh has been announced for the family of the dead and Rs. 50,000 for the injured.
