10 killed in Madhya Pradesh temple stampede

Bhopal, Aug 25 (IANS): Ten pilgrims were killed and over 20 injured Monday when a rumour triggered a stampede at a temple in Madhya Pradesh's Satna district, authorities said.

The stampede took place when the pilgrims were performing the 'parikrama' (circumambulation) of a hill near the Kamta Nath temple in Chitrakoot. Satna is over 400 km from here.

Sources said a large number of pilgrims thronged the temple as it was the auspicious "Somvati Amavasya". They were going around the hill when a rumour broke out of a snapped live wire, causing the stampede.

The dead included six women.

A magisterial probe has been ordered.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh condoled the loss of lives in the stampede.

"Deeply saddened to know about 10 pilgrim deaths in a stampede at a temple in Chitrakoot area of Madhya Pradesh," he said in a tweet.

"I offer my condolences to the bereaved families and wish for speedy recovery of those who got injured in the stampede," he added.
