It may take 200 years to clean Ganga, says Supreme Court

New Delhi, Sep 3 (IANS): The Supreme Court Wednesday asked the government not to give a bureaucratic answer about its plan to clean up the Ganga and instead unveil a stage-by-stage timeline for effective monitoring.

"Don't give us a vision plan. An artist's view. It may take 200 years to implement," said a bench of Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice R. Banumathi. "We don't know if it (cleaning Ganga) will happen in our generation."

"Can you indicate the stages through which this plan has to move and the time involved in each stage?" asked Justice Thakur as Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar started reading from a 29-page affidavit starting with the 1985 first Ganga Action Plan.

The court wanted to be enlightened by "someone who has a comprehensive view of how Ganga would be made pollution free, nitty-gritty of the plan, and how the milestones can be achieved".

The 2,525-km long Ganga, which originates in the Himalayas, is considered the holiest of rivers by Hindus.

Telling Kumar that the government had given a "very bureaucratic answer" to its query, the court said it wanted to know how much will be achieved in the five years this government will be in office.

During the last hearing Aug 13, the court had sought the status report on the government's action plan to clean the Ganga along with a roadmap.

The court had also sought a report on what the government was doing to clean the river from Gangotri up to Haridwar in the first phase.

Justice Thakur observed: "But for nature, it (Ganga) would have been worst. It is nature that is doing a lot of cleaning."

The court told the solicitor general if polluting industries needed to be relocated, the court could assist the government with legal process.

reading thru the comments, i felt sad.. so much pessimism!

Horoable court atleast agreed that Ganga is polluted! and why it didnt monitor GAP, and why not reprimand earlier govts for inaction and pollution?

and Many who said, they want to clean up Ganga, but keep religion aside, guys, your own congress was there before may 26th.. why didnt you volunteer.. I dont mind, whether you or someone else cleans it! .... just tell SAGARIKA GHOSE kinds, who bring in religion on Ganga issue, saying "Ganga jamuni tehzeeb"...!! Ganga is mother river for all faiths and people! if you cant clean it.. dont pollute it!!

and SC, need not worry bout 200 years! it will be cleaned in my life time... I am sure :)

1.How did Supreme Court come to the conclusion that cleaning Ganga might take 200 years ?

2.Why didn't Supreme Court bother about pollution of Ganga all these years ? and gave a negative remark when someone expressed his desire to clean it at any cost !

3.If man can land on moon, if man can touch the bottom of the sea, if man can video chat with someone who is sitting in another part of the world..then I believe cleaning of Ganga is not an impossible work..First One has to have dream..and then he should work hard with dedication to implement it..
Note: 1.London:Thames river had same problem like Ganga..Now see the changes..It is one of the best rivers in the world.. 2.Chinese cleaned the most polluted river and turned into beautiful river..if they can..WHY CAN'T WE ?

Lets start a compaign, Congi dongi's should be the first negative word if you search for JOKERs in dictionary...

    PETROL:

    1) When petrol prise increased during UPA,Congi supporters clamed its because of the international market.
When Petrolprice down under UPA(only during elections),Congi supporters started praising UPA,Sonia etc...

After Modi took oath, petrol price jumped with 2Rs,Congi supporters started blaming Modi for this...

Now recently, when petrol price got down with 4Rs less,Congi supporters claiming its because of International market...

    Inflation:

When Modi inflation raised after Modi formed the govt,Congress said,"Where is Ache din?...Its because of Modi, inflation is rising..."...That time GDP was 5-5.4%...

Ok i will accept that its because of Modi inflation rised...Now GDP growth is 5.7%,Congress claiming its because of them the GDP is increased...

Kya bhai,If the output is good, you want the credit..If the output is bad, blame the opponent..DNA of Congress..

Namo fans accusing Dongi Congi for polluted Ganga Maa. In fact hindustani citizens elected and choose congi to rule india for the past 60 years. Therefore the phrase must be reworded as Dongi Congi & Hindustani's.
It is interesting to note that Supreme Court rightly expressing its cause of concern.., because the same Hindustani people this time voted BJP. No point in blaming Dongi Congi, the common factor in both case is Hindustani's.
To conclude wake guys let clean it by ourselves by not polluting Ganga Maa.
No politics please..., this is a real fact..., none of the political parties are holier than thou.
Google it & see, it was Shriman Rajiv Gandhi who first conceptualized the thought of building a Ram Mandir & cleaning up of Gangaa.

The judges seem to be forgetting that the utive branch is aided by the legislative decision, and the legislative is inturn elected by the people. Ask the question to those who were running the country for 60 yrs instead of vigilantism with a government which is barely 100 days old.

River Ganga is consider as Holy for every Indians much before the advent of western religion. It is like Christians asking Jerusalem kept aside from Christian religion and talk peace there? will you agree for that? or keep Mecca aside and talk about democracy in KSA? so, the fact of the matter is even if you are going to contribute or not or even if the whole mankind wants to contribute or not.. the Mother nature will makes it's correction. Only thing is it is shame that, our future generation will have to pay very heavy price for it. So, stop your dongi giri and talk what is workable or live your life and let others live in their terms.
