Hyderabad, Sep 4: Lack of money and the responsibility of supporting her family is what drove Shwetha Basu to prostitute herself, said the police who arrested her as part of a sex racket from a hotel here on Sunday night.

Anjaneyulu alias Balu, who was the organiser of the racket, reportedly pocketed up to the tune of Rs 1 lakh, from his deep-pocketed customers. He too was tracked down and arrested by the police.

Housed in a state-run rescue home, the actress told police that some bad decisions with respect to her work had led to run out of money and no other financial recourse. She had been advised to go into prostitution to make quick bucks and she had taken the option that had come her way.

Shwetha had shot to fame as a child actor in the popular daily soap 'Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki' and then gone on to win the National Award for Best Child Artiste for her work in the children' s movie Makdee. She was also seen playing the role of actor Shreyas Talpade's sister in the movie Iqbal. The actress has worked in Tamil, Telugu and Bengali film industries.

The 23-year old actress went through a medical exam before being relocated to a government run rescue home for women who have been rescued by the police or are awaiting their trial. Balu the organiser has been sent to jail.
