Mangalore, Sep 19: "The fishermen of the district would get 2,000 houses by Dasara this year. The state government has planned to build 10,000 houses costing Rs 40,000 for each under the Matsyashraya Scheme. In the first phase, 2,000 houses will be built and given to fishermen soon," said state fisheries and district-in-charge minister B Nagaraj Shetty.
He was speaking after inaugurating Matsya Mahila Svawalambana Scheme during a function held at Matsyagandhi Auditorium of South Wharf here on Monday September 18. He also distributed Calamity Relief Fund cheques to fishermen on the occasion.
He said that out of the total Rs 1 crore released for the Matsya Mahila Svawalambana Scheme, Rs 65 lac is allotted to Dakshina Kannada district alone. "Fish markets will be developed in the coming days along with other facilities such as sweet water for 12 hours a day," he added.
MLA N Yogish Bhat presided over the function. Moodbidri MLA K Abhayachandra Jain, ZP president Mamatha D S Gatti, member Sushma Janardhan, Fisheries College dean Prof Keshavnath were also present on the occasion.
