India has taken steps to empower the marginalised: President

New Delhi, Sep 9 (IANS): India has taken a number of measures to empower marginalised people, especially those with disabilities, President Pranab Mukherjee said Tuesday.

"Recognising that marginalised sections of our society, particularly people with disabilities, are an important resource towards the overall development of our country, India has taken up a number of measures to empower people belonging to such segments, particularly people with disabilities," the president told students from King's College, London, and University of Edinburgh, Scotland, who called on him at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The students were in Delhi to attend a short-term course on "Disability and Inclusion: Perceptions and issues in contemporary India" under the University Grants Commission's 'Connect to India Programme' at Delhi University.

The president said that while on one hand, India was committed to economic development keeping in view the emerging global challenges and requirements, "we are equally committed to ensure that the fruits of our development and growth reach all sections of society".

He expressed hope that during their visit to India, the students had opportunities of learning and experiencing first-hand the roadmap of development based on inclusion, which India has been following and was committed to traverse.
