Fiji to mark Thanksgiving Day for peacekeepers' release


Suva, Sep 15 (IANS): Fiji will celebrate national Thanksgiving Day Sep 16 to commemorate the release of the 45 Fijian UN peacekeepers in Syria, media reported.

A statement issued by the information ministry has urged Fijians to hold services across the country, with the National Service of Thanksgiving taking place at the ANZ National Stadium in Suva Tuesday, Fiji Times reported.

The keynote address will be delivered by President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will attend the event.

The UN Sep 11 confirmed that the 45 Fijian peacekeepers, who were captured by Syrian rebels in Golan Heights two weeks ago, have been released and are in good condition.

The 45 peacekeepers were handed over to the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Golan Heights.
