India, China cooperation will help develop the world: Modi

New Delhi, Sep 16 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday hinted at the immense possibilities that could open with a free trade agreement between India and China and the creation of such a market.

"India and China today constitute almost 35 percent of the world’s population. From a purely arithmetic point of view, the betterment of 35 percent of the world’s population and that they decide to work together will open big gates for progress and development in the world," Modi told Chinese journalists here ahead of President Xi Jinping's visit to India.

"The transformation of the lives of 2.5 billion people is a phenomenon of great significance for the region and the world," he added.

Modi went on to list some of the areas of cooperation that would benefit the Asian neighbours.

"India can benefit from China’s strength in hardware such as creation of infrastructure and development of our manufacturing sector.

"On the other hand, India’s strength in software can help Chinese companies to become more efficient and competitive. It offers opportunity for Indian companies to export services to China," Modi said.

The two countries have recently signed a memorandum of understanding for Chinese companies to set up industrial parks in India.

"If you go back 300 years into history, the largest GDP contribution in the world used to come from India and China, who together contributed more than half of the world’s GDP," Modi told the journalists

Xi is arriving Wednesday afternoon in Ahmedabad, the commercial capital of Gujarat state, at the head of a high-powered delegation.

In a first, Modi will receive the Chinese president in Ahmedabad after which the two sides are to ink some agreements related to the region.

    @KRPrabhu, Bangalore
Your comments are quite provocative. I think the reason you have made such comments is because you do not view us as ‘Indians’ but only as ‘Christians’.
Do you think that only by holding high office or being some ‘big shot’ in politics a community can prove their patriotism or show their contribution to the nation ?
Are you saying that one needs to be pro-Modi to be considered as an ‘intellectual’ or a ‘true Indian’ ?
Are you saying that just because there are very few or no Christians who have held high office, ordinary Indian Christians do not have the right to post ‘intelligent’ comments on DW ?
Maybe being a small community we feel intimidated by politics or maybe because most of us do not have adequate financial backing hence, we are averse to take the plunge into the world of politics where money is might ?
Sorry, we may not be ‘big shots’ (though I know there are a few high achievers) but Indian Christians have made huge contributions in the field education and healthcare.

See how many Christian schools, colleges and hospitals have been set up around the country. Ask yourself why parents are desperate to get their children educated in a ‘Christian school’ or a ‘Convent School’ – yes, for the quality of education and for a better ‘English medium’ education. Do you know the number of charitable institutions Indian Christians run - the orphanages, the old age homes, caring for the lepers ?
Have you ever cared to find out how many Indian Christians are there in the Armed forces and how many of them have taken the enemies bullets on their chest and died defending India ? Have you already forgotten Wing Commander Darryl Castelino who died last year while rescuing ‘Hindu’ pilgrims trapped in the Uttarakhand floods ?
Don’t you dare equate patriotism to liking Modi. This is our motherland. We will never succumb to any divisive agenda.
Understand that every little contribution to the nation matters. Jai Hind !

Good observation Mr KRPrabhu, Bangalore. There are several reasons why Christians in general are not in favor of Modi. Let me point out a few:
    1. We believe in Freedom of speech, communal harmony, discipline, cleanliness and Peace to prevail over utter corruption, lawlessness, anti religious propaganda etc.
Politics in India can be played by looters, corruption, murderers etc. which Christians shun!
99% Christians in general believe in Peace and Harmony (1% are the outcast you find everywhere), co-existence & tolerance.
I personally have gone through several videos of atrocities committed by Modi. I don't see much difference in him or Hitler. As a Christian, I will never support a criminal element as my PM.
Christians in general have at least the basic education which helps them to educate themselves better Vs the political drama. They cannot be swayed easily by any propaganda Vs nearly 40% of illiterate population who can be influenced and swayed easily by creating disharmony among religions to achieve political goal.
In this article, Mr Modi cleverly trying to fly and soar high even before getting the wings! Is it not time to put our internal systems in proper order? First bring sanity within India. Progress Vs divisions based on religion. Bring laws not rules so that all are respected equally. Bring progress so that the uneducated can be lifted up by bringing education to the door step.

India will pay a heavy price for embracing China too closer and too fast.

Mr.Modi, think of developing India first, so that we too can help the whole to develop without the help of cunning China and others.

China is already supplying products to whole world. There isn't a house where there is no Chinese item. (at least there will a nail cutter) To complete with china we need to control our prices and change mindset. Because Chinese work very hard and we Indians hardly work. Chinese have a great love for "made in China" goods. But, we Indians always want "foreign" made. Even present govt. is fascinated with "foreign" links. They are given contracts to "foreign" companies. They are signing MOUs with "foreign" companies develop smart cities. As if we don't have any brains or any resources at all.

Cooperation between the neighbors is always good for our safety. Scripture says, your neighbor is for your safety.
We may always work towards it but with DUE CAUTION, based on our past experience, present needs, should analyze neighbors plans and strategy.
Nations and Corporates engage diplomats to have dialogue with enemies even. We should explore all possibilities but with extreme caution, specially with hostile neighbors.

The nexus between politicians, bureaucrats and corporate world is unavoidable in any democracy and even though many may not like to agree, IT IS necessary for mutual survival. Now, the benefits not reaching every Aam Admi has got nothing to do with our relation with China. Agreed, we have not been able to get anywhere close them as of now. May be Modi is trying a different approach/strategy ‘ If you can’t beat them, join them’

Agree with you but I would also like to add that if Modi has good political advisors we should understand that the Chinese Premier too must be having sharp and intelligent advisors which is one of the reasons why China are where they are today i.e. among the world leaders in economy, sports, technology etc.. They (the advisors) will definitely be able to sense Modi's reasons/compulsions to 'join them' and will try to extract the maximum from it.

India need to be wary of that. I am sure India are.

Guys, please do not get excited. China will not co-operate with India. China cannot be trusted in business or trade matters. They have already fought a war with us. Moreover China is known to bully smaller nations (including India), regularly transgressing into their territories. India needs to tread very cautiously with China. Thanks to years of communist rule a large population of China do not even practice any religion (maybe that is why they have progressed economically). We are still unable to get anywhere close to competing with them.

If we allow China to get their foot in the door we will regret it dearly.

India needs to compete with China not co-operate with them because China will only use us as leverage to widen and enhance their global reach. We will be left where we are.

Majority Christian commentators in this forum are anti Modi. Some times I wonder why this is so?Is it because they write to show that they are well educated, good at writting english like Joseph Gonsalves or want to show the readers that they are very brilliant etc., If so why none of christians lead any political party by independent capacity? There are no political leadesr in the country in any political party worth mentioning.George Fernandes was the only nationmist politician that India has seen in 20th century who became leadr of par excellence and worked for the people with selflessness. He was inspired by Lohia's secualist theory.Had there been dynamism in Christians why none has rose to the level of even a ordinary minister in state or centre? It is better not mention Oscar Fernandes here for obvious reasons. No bid business people worth mentioning or even burocrats worth naming(except one who was Maharastra governor earlier)Why?Even few PSU Bank chairmans were with blessings from UPA/Congressman Oscar.Otherwise there also position would have been a nil.Why so?Whether they are worth writting comments in this forum?A big question to ponder by so called intelectuals!!!

Modi is trying to impress china at the same token trying to make JEALOUS of USA. India should be careful with China who is neither friend to India or not anything unless if get benefits from India. One day China will take away most of India where USA will help as usal. Modi is just playing games to show USA that we can do without you but you cannot do anything without US anything MODI. It is not a dokla business it is international affairs

Unfortunately, political decisions are not dictated by the advice received from political advisors but are dictated by who the favoured beneficiaries will be. Time and time again we have seen certain favoured corporates reaping the benefits of such decisions. The benefits do not reach every citizen which is a sorry state of affairs.

See the same happening here. Deja vu !

Mind you, my opinion in this matter has got nothing to do with my dislike for Modi.

All the Indian origin manufacturing units will be closed soon because of easy access to china with low quality goods at cheaper rate. Indians pocket will be drained 50% more on every thing they by due to less durable items even though Chinese items are 25% cheaper comparatively.
