Beltangady, Sep 28: A person who got converted and became a Hindu in order to marry his fiancée was assaulted by activists of some Hindu Organization on suspicion near a cinema theatre near here on Wednesday September 27 evening.

A Muslim young man of Moodigere origin had got converted and become a Hindu during his marriage to Geetha.  He had changed his name as Raju Poojary and the couple was living at Kakkepadav in Bantwal taluk after the marriage.  Recently, Raju's brother Hamza's child had been admitted to a hospital in Mangalore.  Accordingly Hamza had come to Mangalore and on Wednesday he had visited his brother Raju (earlier a Muslim).

In the evening Raju, his wife Geetha and brother Hamza had gone to Bharat Theatre to watch a Kannada movie.  While they were standing in a queue to fetch tickets, activists of a local Hindu organization arrived there and asked them about their identity.  When they told their names, they found that Hamza's name was not matching the religion of two others.

At this point, they started beating up all the three, even without bothering to know about them.   Though Raju tried to clarify the matter, they did not listen.  Instead they assaulted the three.  Meanwhile, message was sent to Beltangady police who immediately arrived.  Once the police intervened, the assaulters stopped beating the three.  The police talked with the victims and resolved the matter.

However, strange is that no complaint was registered against the activists of the Hindu organizations.  The locals said that they were let out immediately.  Speaking to this correspondent, a shopkeeper said that it is due to this freedom, some people are taking advantage and acting as moral police.
