Vienna, Sep 19 (IANS) Russian import ban imposed in retaliation for Western sanctions over the Ukraine crisis brought down the price of pork in Austria, affecting the farmers in the country.

Alarm is growing among Austrian pig farmers in the country as the price of pork fell a further 10 cents to $1.77 per kg Wednesday evening, Xinhua reported.

This came as a result of Russian import ban imposed in retaliation for Western sanctions over the Ukraine crisis.

This represents a total drop in price of pork of 22 percent or 49 cents per kg compared to one year ago.

The Chamber of Agriculture (LK) in the state of Styria said many of the pig farmers have already been facing liquidity problems.

Additionally, the import sanctions from Moscow have led to a "Europe-wide panic selling of pork in order to prevent an even greater loss of revenue," the farmers organisation said in a statement, demanding a quick EU step to provide export subsidies.
