NHRC notice to Jharkhand over killing of suspected Maoists


New Delhi, Sep 19 (IANS): The NHRC has issued notice to the Jharkhand government over the deaths of two villagers who were shot dead by police on the suspicion of their being Maoists.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report from the secretary of home department, Jharkhand within two weeks, a statement said Friday.

Citing the report, it said the state police shot dead two villagers and critically injured four others believing them to be Maoists in Gumla district Sep 3.

"Police fired at their truck loaded with bauxite. The commission has observed that the contents of the news report. If they are true, they raise a serious issue of human rights violation," the NHRC said.

According to the NHRC, the state government has announced Rs.10 lakh as compensation for the kin of the deceased truck driver Hiralal Oraon, 30, and his associate, Nilesh Oraon, 26.
