Bangalore, Oct 1: Senior IAS officer Malati Das who hails from Udupi took over as the new chief secretary of the State on Saturday.

Malati was additional chief secretary and has now succeeded B K Das as the first woman from Karnataka and the second woman in the state after Theresa Bhattacharya to rise to the top post.

Outgoing CS B K Das handed over the charge to Malati who has only 3 months of service left before her superannuation by end-2006.

Malati belongs to the 1970 batch of the Karnataka IAS cadre and is the wife of retired IAS officer S K Das. She has served in various departments including Higher Education and Women and Child Welfare.

She has her BA honours from Delhi University and PG in English from the same university. She has a doctorate in political science, which obtained for her dissertation "Woman and Development".
