New Delhi, Oct 15 (IANS): FIFA identifies Qatar as the organiser of the 2022 World Cup and Wednesday termed all the negativity regarding its right to host the quadrennial mega event, following several controversies surrounding the country's hosting bid, as "premature".
"As of now, Qatar remains the organiser for 2022 FIFA World Cup. There is an investigation going on regarding allegations of bribery between the Qatar bid committee and FIFA members and executives. Michael Garcia (chief independent ethics investigator, FIFA) has given us a report. We will take a look at the report and make a statement about it," FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said at a press conference here Wednesday.
FIFA's decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar has created lot of controversies regarding the country's suitability as hosts and fairness of world football parent body's bidding process amidst reports of widespread corruption and bribery.
FIFA has received widespread criticism from various spheres of society to award the hosting of the World Cup to a country with practically no football history accompanied by concerns over "extreme hot conditions" in June-July - when the tournament is scheduled to be held - stating that the region's climate could "affect performance levels from a health point of view" of footballers.
Several FIFA members have since gone on record saying that the decision to award the tournament to Qatar was a "mistake", including FIFA executive committee member Theo Zwanziger and president Sepp Blatter.
Allaying all fears, Valcke, not ruling out the possibility of the tournament held during the winter season, said that FIFA will ensure a suitable time for the tournament to be held in the country.
"We will find a time to play the World Cup in Qatar. Whatever is being said at the moment about the country's feasibility is premature," he said.
