BJP will get majority in Haryana, says union minister

New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS): Minister of State for Road Transport Krishan Pal has said that the BJP will get a comfortable majority in the Haryana assembly polls and the credit for the victory will go to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP workers.

In an interview to IANS at his residence here a day before the counting of votes, Krishan Pal said that Sunday's election verdict will be "historic" both for the people of Haryana and for the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Considered a dark horse among the probable BJP candidates for the post of chief minister if the party gets a chance to form the government in the state, Pal said the party had drawn support from all communities and its campaign had broken all barriers.

The 57-year-old Krishan Pal, BJP MP from Faridabad, said that he agreed with the exit polls, many of which have given the BJP a clear majority in the 90-member Haryana assembly.

"We will get a comfortable majority," he said.

Asked if the party will prefer to take the support of the Haryana Janhit Congress or the Indian National Lok Dal if it falls short of a majority, Krishan Pal said there would be no need to seek support.

"When people of Haryana give their support, they give it unhesitatingly. They have given the support to the BJP," he said.

Asked if he was a contender for the post of chief minister, Pal said "I am not part of any race."

"I have been honestly discharging the responsibility given to me by the leadership. In future also whatever role is given to me, I will do it with all sincerity," he said.

About the perception that the BJP will choose a "non-jat" chief ministerial candidate if it wins the election, Krishan Pal said the BJP will move ahead taking all communities along. "The mandate will be for good governance, security and development," he told IANS.

Asked if the party will choose the chief ministerial candidate from among the MLAs or MPs in case of victory, the minister said the party's leadership will take the decision.

"The central leadership will take a decision. It will be the decision of the party," he said.

He said the reason for the party's expected good performance was support for Modi and the credit for a party victory will go to the prime minister and the people of the state.

."People have a lot of faith in Modi. People think Modi's name is a synonym for development," Pal said.

Modi had addressed several rallies in the state.

A former state party president, Krishan Pal also said that party president Amit Shah's organisational abilities had also helped the BJP in the state, where it has never won an assembly poll and has been traditionally considered a third force.

"Modi and Amit Shah have connected the youth and booth to the party. Their combination will lead to good results," he added.

Various exit polls have predicted the BJP will do well in Haryana which has been ruled by the Congress for the last 10 years. The BJP had not projected a chief ministerial candidate in the state.

The India TV-C Voter exit poll predicted the BJP getting 34-40 seats in Haryana. The ABP-Nielsen poll said the BJP was set to get 46 seats while Chanakya predicted that the BJP would win 52 seats( -7).

Polling for the Haryana and Maharashtra assemblies was held Oct 15. The counting of votes will take place Sunday.
