Kolkata, Oct 20 (IANS): Mohammedan Sporting -- one of the country’s oldest soccer clubs -- has decided to temporarily close down its football wing following financial difficulties.
The 123-year-old club has been unable to pay salaries to its players, support staff and other employees for the past three months. The club working committee decided not to take part in major tournaments like I-League second division and Durand Cup in the coming season.
However, club president Sultan Ahmed categorically said that Sporting was not winding up.
“We are facing financial difficulties. We will work on our infrastructure improvement plan. From 2015-16 we will again take part in second division I-League,” he said.
