Kolkata, Oct 25 (IANS): Street children of the city will perform and narrate a diverse array of stories in a unique festival here Nov 15, aimed at encouraging love for reading, story-telling and listening among them.
The third edition of 'Golpo Mela' (story-telling carnival) will bring together children of Nabadisha, a Kolkata Police project that provides primary education and mid-day meals to street and slum children in 16 police stations across the city, and students of eminent city schools at the Victoria Memorial Hall.
Organised by Peace Works, an initiative of The Seagull Foundation for the Arts, the format of the event will resemble a school carnival with game stalls and open air art workshop.
"There is an on stage event where Nabadisha children trained by our volunteers perform stories. Off stage there are games stalls set up by reputed city schools.
"An open air art workshop is organised and this year ThinkArts will be presenting puppets at the festival too," said a release attributed to Peace Works director Megha Malhotra.
Nabadisha children from Alipore police station, Tollygunge police station, Jorasankho police station and Chetla Police station will participate.
"2012 saw 600 children participating along with some prominent schools of the city. In 2013, we had nearly 1000 children participating and this year we are hoping to make it much larger," said the release.
