Mangalore, Oct 27: A one-day legal workshop was organised for the Dowry Prohibition Officers here on Thursday October 26. The Karnataka Legal Services Authority, Dakshina Kannada district Legal Services Authority, Women and Child Welfare department and Karnataka State Women's Commission jointly organised the workshop.
Speaking after inaugurating the workshop, Mangalore University vice-chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa opined that awareness on dowry was pre-requisite to eradicate the dowry system. He attributed the increase of dowry harassment cases to lack of financial independence and education among women.
In a special drive by Lok Adalats from September 2 to October 31 in the district, as many as 520 cases were disposed and a compensation of Rs 3.31 crore was distributed. Around 15,000 cases were settled in the state.
District Sessions judge and Dakshina Kannada district Legal Services Authority chairman H M Bharatesh presided over the workshop.
