Algeria committed to supporting Tunisia after legislative elections

Algiers, Oct 27 (IANS): Algeria Monday said it is committed to providing its full support to Tunisia, media quoted foreign ministry spokesman Abdelaziz Benali Cherif as saying.

The remarks came amid legislative elections being held in Tunisia, which are taking place in "good conditions" and within "serenity and calm," Xinhua reported citing the official APS news agency.

Considering the election as “a milestone in the consolidation of democratic institutions and the rule of law", Algeria "congratulates the people and the Tunisian government over this new success", which has been achieved through "the wisdom, foresight and perseverance of all political forces in Tunisia", Benali Cherif added.

The main secular party, Nidaa Tounes, is predicted to win the elections, according to initial poll estimates.

A presidential election, the first of its kind after the revolution of 2011 in Tunisia, is scheduled for Nov 23.
