Mangaluru, Nov 9: Dakshina Kannada Red Cross Unit will be destroying 43 units of expired blood collected through various blood donation drives. Blood will be destroyed through incineration disposal method as the collected blood has expired its validity.
Blood has a shelf life of 35 days and hence it should be used before it expires.
Speaking to daijiworld, Assistant drugs controller KV Nagaraj said " The requirements of blood was less and there was excessive blood. Blood has a life of 35 days. Therefore expired blood cannot be used and it will be scientifically disposed. "
Disposing the collected blood is a painful thing to the blood donors and to the various organization who came forward to organize the blood donation camps.
It is said that in various blood banks, the excessive blood which is expired will be disposed through incineration.
Social activist Hanumanth Kamath said " Blood is a very precious thing. The donated blood going in vain is really a painful thing to blood donors. Blood donors come forward to donate blood to save a life."
He also added that Deputy Commissioner should make alternative arrangements to see that the blood banks do not waste the collected blood.
Speaking with daijiworld, Deputy Commisioner AB Ibrahim said " Blood is precious thing, it should not happen again in future days. By tomorrow evening, meeting will be called with the officials so that this incident does not occur again."
