Udupi, Nov 6: This year the rains do seem to be interested in leaving the scene and making way for winter season. Almost everyday, reports of such untimely rains are being reported from one or the other place in the coastal areas. However, on Sunday November 5 evening, heavy rains lashed almost every place in the undivided district of Dakshina Kannada. Rains were also reported from Kasargod districts.
Some of the areas such as Brahmavar, Sasthan, Kallianpur etc had received heavy rains on Saturday November 4 evening itself. But on Sunday evening, rains coupled with thunder and lightning poured in almost every place. Similar was the case with Dakshina Kannada district too. The sudden and untimely death caught everyone by surprise.
The worst sufferers were farmers. This being the harvesting time, people are already worried about their crops. Some have already incurred loss owing to heavy rains. Crops have been spoiled and gone rotten in many places due to excess rains.
While it rained in the afternoon in Kundapur and Kollur areas, rains lashed through Udupi, Brahmavar, Shirva, Kaup and other surrounding areas late in the evening. Though rains gave a cooling effect to the increasing heat, they were surely untimely and unwanted.
Electricity supply to one Shivram Bhat's house at Heskottur near Shiriyar was hampered, telephone remained dead and TV set, coconut trees burnt owing to lightning strike. People had to spend entire night withoug electricity in Haladi, Shankarnarayana,. Hosangadi and other areas too. One Vithal Shetty's house at Chantar near Brahmavar was damaged in lightning strike on Saturday night. The total loss has been estimated at Rs 50,000.
Rains in the Dakshina Kannada district on Sunday evening proved spoilsport for many programmes too. While Stany Mendonca's nite at Kelrai came to an abrupt end, programmes, weddings, parties etc in other places too were hampered.
