Bantwal, Nov 13: In a tragic case of apathy by the health department, a sick beggar woman struggling between life and death was found pleading for help the whole day on Wednesday November 12 at a deserted bus stand at Devarakatte Kotramana Gundi here.

The bus stand has become a dwelling place for beggars for the last few years.

Member of town municipal council Devadas Shetty who saw the woman, telephoned the Bantwal council officials at 10 am and informed them about her condition.

The officials in turn informed the community health department and asked them to take her to the hospital. However, the health department did not see her even till 4 pm.

Devadas Shetty who observed the situation contacted the Mangalore district health officials and requested them to send an ambulance. Even then, the health department did not bother to send the ambulance till 7 pm, said eyewitnesses.

Finally, concerned that the woman's condition may deteriorate further, the council member and locals themselves admitted her to the community health center.

I feel very sorry for the woman. It is not the responsibility of health department to pick up the destitute and admit them to the hospital. It is the duty of First Responders like Police, Fire and Human Services personnel.

Well, to get the quick response from the police, get her to kiss to someone in public or say that someone is converting her to Christianity. Then the police will arrive in a lightening speed, arrest her and make available of all basic needs like food, shelter, medical attention and media publicity.

But, who will kiss her? That is a million dollars question.

What a sad and miserable life for this destitute? How long the health center will take care of her ?
Hope that some social organization/help center will come forward to shelter her.

If there was VIP persons call, health department would have come running on four legs. what a sad state of affair. But surely we have good people with kind heart and this is what the locals did. Every villager should see that everything is in order in their area. May it be cleaning the place, someone is sick, any law and order required, getting rid of ba#vas, criminal activities, dadagiri. All have to stand united for a good cause. God Bless one and all.
