Udupi: Agumbe Ghat road to remain closed for three months

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Nov 20: The commuters who are expecting hard days ahead because of proposed closure of Shiradi Ghat stretch of national highway for repairs and improvements, have another problem at hand.

It has been decided to close Agumbe Ghat road, which provides shortcut access to Shivamogga district, for three months from December 21 onwards.

The government has released ten crore rupees for conducting extensive repairs and renovations. Stretches of this road to a total length of 2.5 km will be repaired out of these funds. Besides being dotted with pot holes, the road which winds through hair pin bends, has become perilously narrow at various spots, endangering the safety of vehicles which take a descent.

This road is preferred by motorists from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district as the ghat road provides the shortest connection to Shivamogga district. Once the road is closed, they will have to take alternative routes which are much longer in distance.

This road needs a permanent solution. Patching potholes and filling worn tar isn't a solution. Agree that Agumbe see highest rain also one reason for bad roads. But we have technology and there are companies ready to work on this. Earlier several companies worldwide proposed detailed report to government to give a permanent solution including Agumbe ghat.

Need to wait another 4 months to see what type of job has been done in 10 crores?

Everyone knows, even the Minister-in-charge and the higher ups in Govt. are aware, there is technology to solve this perennial problem.
There should be a will to use that method. For that all concerned in that department has to become, not very, but honest, which they do not want to become, for the simple reason, they can not make money out of the project every now and then.
As such any project that is completed is of inferior in quality and has to be redone again and again thereby filling the pockets of all concerned throughout.
Everyone comments on all these Government works just out of frustration, including you and myself knowing nothing good will come out of it.
All the politicians and their workers are first class graduates of corruption and goondagiri. Then only they are eligible to become Minsiters etc. in the Govt.

Recently, during Deepawali I drove from Bangalore to Karkala via Charmadi ghat. Surprisingly, the ghat was 95% in excellent condition but the sad part was a couple of heavy duty trucks who risked to drive were spotted. I wondered in due time, this road too will become like Shiradi Ghat? Crores of rupees are being spent on Shiradi, Charmadi, and now Agumbe for minor patch work? Why not permanent solution? Road laying is not tyre puncture repair work where every time you want to make money during every monsoon. It is high time the tax payers money is not wasted every year

The dist authorities should specify the alternative route and publish the map of this new road in local newspapers of both districts. Also this alternative route should be made motorable before closing the Agumbe road.
