Margao, Nov 13: A case of offence under the Indian Penal Code's section 309 has been registered against police constable Pradip Velip (30), attached to the Margao Police station, for allegedly trying to commit suicide.

For the last three years he has been attached to the Margao police station and was discharging duty at the Central Bank, near the police station.

On Saturday night at 9.45, he is reported to have tried to end his life by firing two rounds of bullets at himself by using his service rifle .303. His attempt went in vain, as the bullets are said to have passed through the side of his neck and chin.

The incident took place when he was on duty at the Central Bank. On hearing the gunshots, the people gathered and saw him lying in a pool of blood. Velip was rushed to hospital at once.

He is now recuperating in the Hospicio Hospital in Margao. The police said they might record his statement on Monday.
