Mangalore, Nov 16: The dismissal of Maravoor gram panchayat employee Bharathi who was working as a clerk, has evoked a strong reaction from the natives of Maravoor and Kenjar villages.

About 500 villagers marched out in protest in front of the zilla panchayat office here to urge the chief executive officer to withdraw the dismissal order and allow her to continue in office.

Bharathi, who was working as a clerk in Maravoor GP from 1995, had taken a three-month maternity leave from December 21, 2005. But owing to some complications she was asked by her physician to take rest for another three months, till July 2006. When she reported on duty on July 10, the GP president did not allow her to join work.

In October, she was issued a dismissal letter from the GP secretary. The protesters termed the dismissal as illegal and baseless.

DK zilla panchayat CEO A M Kunjappa, who was at the spot, assured the protesters that action would be taken in this regard in accordance with the law.

Former MLC Pratapchandra Shetty, former MLA Vijaykumar Shetty, Sadashiv Ullal, and other GP and ZP members were also present during the the protest.

ZP president Mamata D S Gatti was also present.
