Mangalore, November 17 : The Compay of Master Mariners of India, Mangalore Chapter and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, Madras Branch, Mangalore Unit jointly organized a seminar ‘Winds of Change in Shipping’ on FridayNovember 17 at Hotel Taj Manjarun here.

The two-day seminar was inaugurated by Tamil Vanan, chairman, of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT). In his Inaugural address, he said that India has been a focus of trade from centuries and therefore shipping has been having immense significance. Speaking about the changes that have come across in the shipping arena, he revealed that privatization has contributed immensely to the developments that have taken place.

P S Barve, former Nautical advisor to the government of India, delivered the keynote address. He unwrapped his worries regarding the shortage of manpower worldwide. He told that the sea profession is losing its popularity to other professions such as IT, management etc. 

He opined that the tendency of senior officers quitting the sea comparatively early, is a noticeable development in the utilization of man power. He also recommended a reduction in serious accidents such as collisions, grounding and fire. 

Capt S Kundagiri, secretary, The Company of Master Mariners, Capt B R Rao, consultant surveyor, Mangalore, Capt J P Menezes, convenor and president of KCCI and Ashok Alva, shipping consultantwere present on the occasion.
