Bengaluru: 'Kiss of Love' postponed after police refuse permission

Bengaluru, Nov 29 (PTI): After Bengaluru police rejected permission for the 'Kiss of Love' campaign that was proposed for tomorrow, the organisers today decided to postpone the controversial event for a future date.

"In order to allay their fears, we have now issued a detailed reply to the police which clearly outlines our intention behind organising the event. Therefore, we are postponing the event (Kiss Of Love) to a future date based on their reply," the organisers said in a statement here posted on Facebook.

The organisers had earlier announced that they would go ahead with the event tomorrow, defying police order which had refused to give a nod to it, contending it would be an act of obscenity.

The planned event had earned opprobrium from all political parties in the state who found it unacceptable, besides raising the hackles of right-wing organisations which have threatened to counter it.

The organisers contended that the "Kiss of Love" is protected under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution which guarantees freedom of speech and expression.

It is also legally wrong to presume that an act is obscene without seeing it in the larger context of the meaning behind the act, the organisers added.

The organisers also said they have alerted the police to a number of judicial precedents on the point and hope they would reconsider their decision so that they can hold the event on another day without any disruptions.

The organisers said they approached the police after they received number of threatening calls and messages.

"There has been a fair amount of uncertainty in the build up to the event, and we received a number of threatening calls and messages. Consequently, we approached the police to seek their assistance and protection in conducting the event," they said.

The organisers said on November 27, the police informed that the event could not be held as it amounted to an obscene act and sought more details about the number of participants, among others.

In order to allay their fears, the organisers said they have issued a detailed reply to police, clearly outlining their intention behind organising the event.

"We have stated that the intention is not to create a spectacle, nor to engage in any obscene acts and certainly not to create any public nuisance," they said.

"We have asserted our right to engage in a peaceful protest and to use the 'Kiss of love' event to bring to attention the dangers of rising moral policing in India and in Karnataka," they added.

The first "Kiss of Love" event was held in Kochi on November 2 after an attack on a coffee shop by pro-Hindutva activists in Kozhikode in October who alleged that it was harbouring canoodling couples. Similar events had been organised at Kolkata, Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai.

Today I have read news on child rape, a man ditched and deserted his pregnant girl friend. I think the organizers of 'kiss of love' have a better stand in fighting such crimes seen in our society than the one which they are proposing to do against moral policing.
As per me people affected due to 'moral policing' are the students who are not really interested in their studies but interested in doing things against their parents wish such as romancing with boy/girl friend.Hence the fight against moral policing can not be called as noble cause.

    Dear Sudhakar,
If you go through the comments of KOL supporters, one can clearly understand that they do not have any common reason for this. Some wants to kiss in public coz they hate RSS, some do it coz to protest against pub attack, some kiss in public to protest against BJP and some coz, their samsung mobiles run out of juice faster.

If you people have the guts go and file case against Karnataka Govt./Police Dept. for not allowing this "Kiss of Love"

    Ms. D'Souza,
Thanks for enlightening about the reasons behind this. What a way to protest against 'saffron flag hooligans who made our life miserable'.
I was wondering about the ways Gandhi and Luther King were protesting against someone.

Innovations are good. what will be your next way of protest? something similarly interesting like public kiss?

will you assure us that we will be not attacked again.

    Ms. D'Souza,
Why do you think you should behave in a way in public that offends others, however negligible their numbers be?

If you are open to rethink, please read on.
Kissing in public was a taboo earlier, even in west. They were progressive, shed their inhibitions on the way and they are now what they are. But in India, it will take some more time for the society to accept this and so do not thurst this on the society. Probably you should be watching your grandson kissing his girlfriend on the roads without any inhibitions, and i wish so.

Women wearing mod outfits, women sipping wine in restaurants, Intercast & inter religiious marriages, Marriages without dowry how many examples you want to understand how our society changes?

Overnight you cant expect India to be Europe.

The reason for any protest is to gain public attention about the issue. Instead of reacting to the way they are protesting people should try to know the main reason behind the protest. Where in this case the issue was very sensitive and about the present situation running in country like sexual harrassment etc, which highly required people attention and involvement. If it was done in normal way by fasting or so would never heard by anybody..

Why make a public show of private affairs? To obtain permission from authorities for any activity plans itself proves that the event will be weighed in all angles prior to issuing a go-ahead. I do not think a peck on the cheek and a hug in greeting between friends and families that has been an accepted norm thru generations is a bone of contention for these organizers. While our generation has the world open to us with endless possibilities to advance, we tend to forget that we also have responsibility towards our elders, our society and the culture we are born into. Moral policing is illegal and should be condemned, but, people do not need to follow the organizers to prove their love towards another human being.
