Bengaluru: Not all kisses obscene, argue 'Kiss of Love' organisers

Bangalore, Dec 1 (DHNS): After deciding to postpone the 'Kiss of Love' event that was scheduled for Sunday, the organisers have given a 22-point letter to the Bengaluru Police Commissioner M N Reddi in defence of the event.

Following threats from some right wing organisations that have termed the event as against Indian culture, the organisers have, in their letter, explained why the event should not be termed obscene or against the culture.

They have also emphasised that they have a right to go ahead with the event.

'Not an illegal act'

Among the various aspects of the event that they have represented, the organisers have explained how various courts in the country, in several cases, have held that kissing is not an act of 'obscenity'.? The letter states, "The Indian judiciary has never termed kissing in public illegal. Kissing can, in fact, be seen as a form of expression of love and it is wrong to presume that every kiss is an act of sexual expression and that it is necessarily obscene."

The organisers have argued that while critics have condemned the event that it is a violation of moral standards, moral standards themselves are determined by the law and not based on the subjective 'feelings' of a group of persons.

"We would also like to remind the State of its role in protecting rather than curbing legitimate expression,"? the letter read. Also, they have brought to the notice of the police officials that they are receiving threats from people who are objecting to the event.

One organisation has even announced a prize money of Rs 1001 for every person who comes to the city to attack those engaged in the event, according to organisers.

"We are informing you that there is this threat to us and we will not let this stifle our voices and prevent us from exercising our fundamental rights. It is your duty to protect us from these threats and take all necessary action against these persons and organisations."

'Not giving it up'

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Vijayan Kallil, media co-ordinator for the event in Bengaluru, said they were absolutely not giving it up.

The police have told them that it would take another three to four days for them to analyse the contents of the letter.

"After this, we will discuss with the NGOs that are in our support and intimate the status to the public,"? he added.

    Lydia,

First, kissing in public is not obscene. If a couple want to express love for each other we should not have any problems with it.

Secondly, you have mentioned that these people should take up some noble causes. I don`t know what is more noble in a democracy than to fight for one`s freedom of expression.

Please understand that the organisers are holding the kiss of love as a protest against moral policing. So they are doing exactly what moral policing opposes. If you are against kiss of love then you definetly side with the moral police. Simply because there is not much difference between your thinking and that of moral policing goons.

Do you know why moral police exist these days its because people find it ok for them to do moral policing. Has there been a serious protest against them? no. Thats because majority of people support moral policing. Just read all the comments in any news regarding kiss of love article, you will see that majority of people endorse moral policing.

twenty years ago i believe Mangalore was a better place. but now all you have to do is just type Mangalore in youtube and you get this - moral policing videos. guys beating up girls. This is what Mangalore has become.

Will this protest have its desired effect? This is not the way to protest moral policing. Will the parents who watch these scenes be comfortable in future, especially when they are likely to get proposals for their daughters? I would have preferred a silent morcha with banners to protest the moral policing rather than kissing in public. No parent will like or approve it.

i think instead of wasting time for such an useless event, the should contribute this time for cleaning up bangaluru city.i really don't understand by organising this kind of event what they are going to achieve nothing at all.this not the way to your protest against moral policing. certainly not.i think they should visit to gulf country for educate self about culture and public behaviour.being democratic country means you just cant do anything you want.these people when they go to foreign country they respect their culture.when it comes to India the great country we tend to take all things for granted isn't it. please teach young generation some good things not how to kiss in public.nowadays most of our young generation like to show off their body wearing half naked dress, tight fitting jeans and tight tshirt why are we obsessed with western dress, why can't we wear proper decent dress that include nice churidar, jeans and tops and sarees.there are so many women in india they are well educated and always wear well mannered dresses.

Have the organizers made public who is a model of their 'Kiss of Love' mission ? Is it Husband/Wife, Father/Mother, Brother/Sister, Mother/Son, Father/Daughter or is it Girl/Boy friend pair ? All pairs, other than Girl/Boy friend pairs, have a permanency of relationship, hence upon pulling up this instance a million times in future, there will not be any embarrassment. Lets assume the Girl/Boy friend pair did not reach upto marriageable stage. How will the individuals involved feel if the clip is brought to the four every now and then in future ?

The organizers should first pose themselves with a partner to kiss publicly and analyze the future consequences than going about with their trumpet of false publicity.

Fighting Moral Police is noble, fighting rapes is commendable but this negative progress is not something every common person will support.

Please keep your useless social work to yourself !

Why should it be a big issue for love of kiss instead why not it be "love to pick rubbish thrown in open streets" - this will atleast clear the atmosphere instead of hurting someone.

Flash mob dances are not illegal. but they do cause problem for others. Even flash mob dances are done with some purpose like advertising or promotion of a film etc.
What is the motive behind this Kiss of Love program? No one is able to give a clear picture. Is it against BD, KFD or all of the society?

Some youngsters have gone crazy after all the free porn content available on net. You can see secret explorations happening all over the cozy places. Same people want to do all those in public without any fear of the society. Kiss of Love is the beginning.

Can anyone conclude any better reason for this Kiss of love show?

    Shankar Sir...
It boils down simply to this thing.
The 'Moral Police' or something has 'Kujuli', they do not know the law of the land and things like that.
These organizers of this 'Kiss of Love'too have 'Kujuli' of a different kind and want to put to rest their 'itch'...
    Right? Kujuli's of different kinds....

A Romantic Kiss is an Ignition
    That Leaves a Lasting Impression
    And More often Than Not...
    Leads to Further Aggression....
    Exploration and Sometimes...
    Transgression!
To Reduce it to 'Legitimate Expression'.....
Is a sure sign of 'Exasperation'!
    .........................
    Other types of Kisses.......????
Just here and there now 'bereft of emotion'!!
