Tokyo, Dec 3 (IANS/EFE): Some 300 passengers were stuck in a train for nearly nine hours in the Yamagata prefecture in northeastern Japan after heavy snowfall caused a tree to fall on an overhead cable, snapping power supply, state television channel NHK reported Wednesday.

The train left Yamagata for Sendai early Wednesday but stopped near the Yamadera station just 25 minutes later due to the power outage.

In addition to the blackout, there were several other collapsed trees on the tracks blocking the train's path.

As a result, some 300 passengers were left stranded without heating in the train in the mountainous region till nearly nine hours later when the train could resume operations and reach the Yamadera station.

All passengers were in good condition, said the railway company whose employees distributed food and hot drinks to the passengers while they were stranded.

There has been heavy rainfall in the region over the past two days with temperatures dropping below the freezing point, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
