Beltangady, Dec 5: In a bizarre incident, the police found out that a person who approached the station and claimed himself to be the driver of a Wagon-R car that had caused the death of a girl, was in fact, doubling up for the original driver.
The police here have been looking for the driver of a car whch was involved with an accident, causing the death of a student of Laila school, Pooja Laxmi (7) some days back. This accident had taken place in Manjakal in Nada village. The police have been making efforts to trace the Wagon-R driver, identified as Abdul Razak, but he has been evading arrest since the last four days.
On Thursday December 4, an advocate brought with him a youth to the police station, and introduced him as the accident-accused. When he was being questioned by the police personnel, a person hailing from the community and village to which the above person belongs, informed Punjalakatte police sub-inspector about him. The sub-inspector identified the person to be belonging to a place within the jurisdiction of his station, and that he used to visit the station often to get updated about certain cases.
The police also found that the person was groping for answers over several questions. At the end, he confessed that he had agreed to present himself as the accused, as he was offered Rs 15,000 to do so. It is gathered that the total amount of the deal was Rs 50,000. The police, who have let the person go, have now begun efforts to nab the original accused in right earnest.
