Chennai, Nov 22: The state-owned Cooptex is all set to weave its way into the Guinness Book of World Records with its new creation- "a silk sari designed with 1,64,492 colours".

Christened 'Peacock Feather Silk Saree' and priced at Rs 40,000, the design of the Saree was unveiled by Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi in the presence of Cooptex Managing Director M P Nirmala at the Secretariat here today.

Nirmala told UNI, 1003 shades were used in the weft and 164 in the warp. The feat had been certified by Textiles Committee of India.

The seven Wonders of the World - Pyramids of Egypt, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Eiffel Towers at Paris, The Taj Mahal, Great Wall of China, Empire Estate Building and Hanging Gardens of Babylon, were brought to life on the border of the sari, which was jointly designed by Cooptex and the Sirumugai Pudhur Ramalinga Saudeswari Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society in Coimbatore district.

The 'pallu' was woven with another 'wonder', the beautiful Meenakshi Amman temple of Madurai with the sun shining on it.

Traditional motifs like 'yali', swan, temple chariot embellished the 'pallu.' "The society had already applied for getting entry into the Guinness Book of Worlds through Gandhigram University. They (Guiness people) have asked for some clarifications and replies were sent," Nirmala said.

About 15 weavers were involved in designing the sari that took about 25 to 45 days.

Based on demand from the public, the sari would be weaved in 45 days' time and delivered to customers.
