Sushma draws flak over demand to make Gita national scripture

New Delhi, Dec 9 (Agencies) : External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday came under opposition attack in Rajya Sabha for demanding that the Bhagwad Gita be declared national scripture, with members saying this was a “sinister” design to alter secular character of the Constitution.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, D Raja (CPI) demanded that the House should disapprove her demand even as the Government sprang to Ms. Swaraj’s defence saying Gita was not a dharma granth (religious scripture) but a karma granth (book on individual’s actions).

“Gita is not a dharma granth. It is a karma granth,” Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

He said some people see secularism in danger whenever there is talk about sanskriti and sanskar (heritage and culture). “The entire country is proud of Bhagwad Gita,” he said.

“You cannot impose one holy book as the national book,” Mr. Raja said, adding India is a multi-religion and multi-lingual society where different sections hold various scriptures as holy.

Ms. Swaraj’s statement, he said, was not an isolated statement and should be seen in the context of remarks by BJP and RSS leaders.

“There is a sinister design to alter secular fabric and secular character of the Constitution,” he said.

Mr. Raja asked why the BJP government was giving “special treatment” to Sanskrit language in school education at the cost of other Indian languages such as Tamil, which are equally ancient.

Ms. Swaraj’s statement, he said, was “objectionable” and “the House should take note of it and disapprove it.”

While Digvijay Singh (Congress) said he condemns Ms. Swaraj’s statement, Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M) said the holy book for India is its Constitution that guarantees right of equality to all.

Several members from Left, Congress and Trinamool rose to associate themselves with Mr. Raja.

varnashrama means division of labour which is there in european civilisation also .caste system is not mentioned in any hindu books.

caste system is man made system by those who were in higher echelons of society those times to protect thier selfish inetrests and to have unilateral control of resources.

even when india(erstwhile bharath varsh) was there under monarchy, india gave place to parsis, jews, and muslims also to propagate thier faith and live in india peacefully.

worlds orders are rapidly changing.thousands of years ago it was monarchy and then came socialism, communism for few hundred years.today we are seeing democracy.in few decades who knows, what order will come.

communal violence or hatred,be it any religions is not good for country to prosper

Mahatma Gandhiji in his prayer meetings read from various holy books of different reliions.

They were mainly the Bible-Quran and Bhagavat Gita.

The last song sung by Gandhiji was
"when I survey the wondrous cross".
This Christian song was the most loved song of Mahatma Gandhi along with "abide with me" another Christian song. After some long fasting, he has indicated to his mentor Rev. C.F. Andrews " sing that song" which was "when I survey the wondrous cross".

It is good for the children to have spiritual insight in life, and that must be done at home.

Mrs. Sushma's idea will please the majority population of India, but it will create a lot of confusion to the secular India and to the world, in her underlying motive to shift India from secularism to Hindu theocracy.

Let every school teach the students from various religious books.

    Vellano1,

I couldn't actually comprehend your implication in comparing an educational institution's functioning with that of an External Affairs Minister. An institution is established by an able person (or organization) to impart services he(it) mastered. Whereas, the External Affairs Ministry is a government body, run at taxpayers cost. The minister has taken oath to serve the nation without discrimination and in adherence to the constitution. How can she err on her oath ? Is she not supposed to influence about holy scriptures of all religions or none at all ? If you are aware that the Minister is not paid out of government coffers but a certain religious body has sponsored her remuneration, do inform the readers in advance, there will be no dispute to what you say.

Secondly, have you ever seen a business house, may it be out of personal investment or through grants, given to others to run ? Especially when the person who established it is qualified to run it (without which grants will be a dream) ? As such, whether one is heading an organization himself or hiring someone for it is out of pertinence here.

As for the Shloka, I am at fault not to have read it again before posting the comment. Do let me know if you are suing me for a missing word, I will prepare my defense.

I have seen all such colleges.. but there is NO ALL INCLUSIVENESS!!

when you nationalise the banks, when you take temple income also under government fold, why leave out Mosques and churches? or their properties like church lands and waqf properties? when you appoint seculars in government management, why not colleges?

    Krishna, Mangaluru,

Initially it was reported that 3.11 lakhs bogus voters (not your imaginary figure of 6.4 lakhs) in Varanasi in some newspapers. This news started to appear in news media from 27.11.2014. But, UP Election Commissioner declined this news on 29.11.2014 (source News-18).

During the general election time Congress was ruling in center and SP is ruling state. I can't understand the logic for BJP doing any misdeeds. If there was any bogus votes, I presume Congress and SP fully responsible since their intension was to defeat Modi by hook or crook.

In 2009 total electorates in Varasani was 15.8 laksh, if you add your figure of 6.4 lakhs bogus votes, total figure should go up to 22.2 laksh voters (if we consider no population growth in last 5 years which is impossible). But, total electorates in Varanasi in 2014 is 17.7 lakh only.

Reading news of all groups is not important. Important is whether you have brain to judge whether the news are right or wrong.

modi is doing the right thing as a pm should take the responsibility to lead the nation bcoz whatever right or wrong done by the govt,pm is answerable to the people and not his cabinet colleagues.

otherwise it will become like prev govt where nobody including pm is ready to take responsibility for all the numerous scams that took place during thier govt.people want the govt which is answerable to thier deeds and not like prev govt which is not ready to own the deeds they have done.

@ jeevan - Your RSS chors talk about Nationalism.....but Bellary Brother's Mother dearest is talking about Implementing Gita ...which is related to religion.

India is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation and implementing religious based books will not augur well for a secular democratic nation.

Moreover,Looks like fascists are confused between nationalism and a religion based nation.
