Azamgarh, Nov 26: In a jolt to gangster Abu Salem's dreams of representing Uttar Pradesh assembly, his application to enroll in the voters' list has been rejected even as his lawyer said he will move court on the matter.
Salem’s application was rejected by Nizamabad sub-divisional magistrate Vidya Shankar Singh on the ground that he had not been residing in the area since the past 14 years nor did he present himself for a plea in this regard.
Singh said he had examined the matter before rejecting the application.
Salem's counsel Ashok Sarawgi said he would be taking the matter to court.
The jailed gangster and one-time associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, extradited from Portugal along with former Bollywood actress Monica Bedi, had said he wanted to contest the coming assembly elections in the state.
Posters featuring his photographs with Diwali and Eid greetings had sprung up in this constituency and the regional political party Apna Dal said it would back him.
