Mangalore, Nov 26: The Mangalore Bar Association organized a felicitation programme for lawyers who served for more than 50 years on Saturday in the S D M Law College auditorium here.

Karnataka High Court Judge and Administrative Judge of DK District, Justice R Gururajan inaugurated the function.

Minister for Fisheries and Muzarai and In-charge Minister for DK district B Nagaraj Shetty presided over the function. He released the souvenir of the Mangalore Bar Association as well.

Twelve out of the scheduled sixteen lawyers were felicitated. H Mahabala Rai, P M Narayana Murthy, N Ramachandra Bhat, M Sitaram Rai, K Purushottam Poojari, Venkat Rao, Jayaram Shetty, Clarence Pais, M Shankarnarayan Bhat, Rajaram Samita, N Raghava and Walter A D’Souza were the lawyers who were honoured.

In his presidential address, Nagaraj Shetty appreciated the vigour of the honoured lawyers, many of them, who still desire to attend the court and fight cases. He said that the lawyers are a testimony of the great-learned men that the land keeps producing.

He assured that funds would be released for the new building of the district court. He added that providing independent offices for lawyers would also be considered.

Speaking on the occasion, R Gururajan said that many other professions have come up. But it is also heartening that advancement in education has lead to the growth of many law schools and colleges. This has developed a great scope for law.

He mentioned that housing facilities for the young lawyers are a matter that requires attention from the Government. Pointing out the significance of the felicitation, R Gururajan said that serving for 50 years in the difficult profession of law is an achievement in itself. He further stated that the achievement is similar to a West Indian batsman scoring a hundred against Australia.

Mangalore MLA Yogish Bhat, Principal District and Sessions Judge H M Bharateesh, Karnataka High Court Judges Justice S Abdul Nazir and Justice Subhash B Adi were the other dignitaries present on the occasion.
