US citizens in Thailand urged to take precautions

Bangkok, Dec 10 (IANS/EFE): The US embassy in Bangkok Wednesday suggested that US citizens in Thailand take precautions, following publication of a report revealing interrogation techniques of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) that some consider torture.

This could lead to anti-US protests and outbreaks of violence targeting US interests abroad, according to an e-mail sent by the U.S. embassy in Bangkok.

A US Senate report released this week indicated that the CIA conducted interrogations of suspected terrorists in more brutal ways than it had admitted to doing in the years following 9/11.

The document details the use of controversial interrogation methods used on Al Qaeda members who were kept in clandestine prisons in Europe and Asia for up to eight years after 9/11.

Though the report did not specifically refer to Thailand, the country's media has highlighted rumours about secret US facilities supposedly existing in the north of the country, rumours that have been denied by the Thai government.

According to the report, individuals captured after 9/11 were subjected to sleep deprivation for over a week and were threatened with death.

The Senate report also pointed to practices such as water boarding, in which water is forced down the throat of suspected terrorists until they choke and vomit.

The e-mail asked Americans in Thailand to remain alert and take precautions, such as avoiding protests and confrontations.
