Athens, Dec 10 (IANS): Greek convict Nikos Romanos ended a 31-day hunger strike Wednesday after a legislative amendment on the terms for prisoners' educational leave was endorsed by the assembly.
Nikos Romanos was sentenced to 16 years in prison for an armed bank robbery in Velvento in northern Greece in February 2013. The 21-year-old went on a hunger strike demanding a furlough to study at university.
Wednesday, the assembly passed a legislative amendment, granting conditional educational leave for prisoners under an electronic tagging programme, Xinhua reported.
Prisoners will be able to follow studies electronically for the first two months and then be given the green light to attend courses at universities while wearing an electronic bracelet.
